Generating thumbnails

A thumbnail is a small bitmap image of the first page of a content element. Using thumbnails allows users to quickly verify content before downloading or checking out documents.

About this task

Thumbnails can be generated automatically in three ways:
Event-based generation In event-based generation, thumbnails are created automatically for new documents as the documents are created.
Sweep-based generation In sweep-based generation, thumbnails are created automatically for existing objects when a complete sweep of the database is run. You can configure thumbnail generation sweep jobs by specifying filter criteria for determining which documents to process, when each job will run, and how long it will run. After a job finishes processing all the documents that meet the filter criteria, the job stops, even if the allocated time is not all used. Additional thumbnail generation sweep jobs can be run to change the size or format of existing thumbnails or to process documents by using different criteria (such as finding documents that were not processed in a previous sweep).
Ad hoc generation In ad hoc generation, you can make a direct request for a thumbnail to be generated for a content element. Unlike event-based and sweep-based generation, ad hoc generation is not limited to the first content element in a document version. For example, you can request two thumbnails for a document version by specifying two different content elements in the document version.
