On the VARY ACT operator command

VARY ACT,ID=NCP2,LOAD=YES,RNAME=(NS1L1,SW1L1)
The load can be performed over either of the two possible link stations (NS1L1 or SW1L1) in Figure 1. Because both link station names are specified on the RNAME operand, VTAM® does the following actions:
  • Activates the nonswitched link
  • Performs the dial operation and establishes the switched connection

The VTAM default load station preference is:

  1. Active channel link
  2. Active nonswitched link
  3. Active dial-out switched link
  4. Active dial-in switched link
  5. Pending active nonswitched link
  6. Pending active dial-out switched link
  7. Pending active dial-in switched link

Therefore, if the nonswitched link is operative, the load is performed using the nonswitched link.

If you omit the switched load station (SW1L1) from the RNAME operand, the switched link connection is not established, and only the nonswitched connection is used. If a failure occurs on the nonswitched link, the operator can issue a subsequent VARY ACT operator command with the RNAME operand specifying the switched load station name (SW1L1).

If the switched link is not used for the initial activation and load process, you can activate it at any time using a VARY ACT operator command.

Note: When you are loading an NCP over switched lines and the NCP has channel-attached or leased line connections to another host, the NCP load is not complete until the host that initiated the command receives an indication that the command has completed.
