Sending line errors to VTAM

z/OS Communications Server: SNA Network Implementation Guide
SC27-3672-01

The NCP maintains statistical information regarding temporary line errors and other hardware error conditions for links and PUs. Normally the NCP sends this statistical information to VTAM® only when a statistical counter overflows or a permanent error occurs. With intensive mode recording (IMR), error information is sent to VTAM as the errors occur. You can use the MODIFY IMR command to start IMR. With the MODIFY IMR command, you can request intensive mode recording for a communication link between an NCP and one of its peripheral physical units, or between two NCP major nodes.

The error information is sent to VTAM in a miscellaneous data recorder (MDR) record. MDR records are written to the system error log (LOGREC). If the NetView® hardware monitor is in your system, VTAM can send copies of the MDR records to them.

To begin intensive mode recording on a link between an NCP and a peripheral physical unit, specify the name of the physical unit on the ID operand of the MODIFY IMR command. The SDLC link must be active.

To begin intensive mode recording on a link between two NCPs, specify the name of the link station in the NCP initiating IMR on the ID operand of the MODIFY IMR command. The SDLC link must be active.

You can also use the MODIFY IMR command to specify the number of intensive mode recording events to be recorded before intensive mode recording is automatically terminated. You can cancel intensive mode recording before this limit is reached.
