The frequently asked questions (FAQ) is a list of questions and answers about the information center.

The term topic refers to a singular topic in the information center. The term topic collection refers to a group of related topics for which a PDF might also be available. The term manual refers to a manual or book with an order number.

Printing

Q: How do I print an information center topic collection?
A: All of the topic collections in the information center are available as a PDF. To print a topic collection, you can do the following:
  • From the navigation tree:
    1. Navigate to the topic collection that you want to print.
    2. Click PDF file for topic collection name and follow the instructions on that page.
Or:
  • From the information center home page:
    1. Click PDF files and manuals.
    2. Click the topic collection you want to print, and follow the instructions on that page.
Q: How do I read, print, or download a manual online?
A: All manuals are available as PDF files and can be read, printed, or downloaded online.
  1. Click PDF files and manuals in the navigation tree.
  2. Click the order number next to the title of the manual to read, print, or save that manual.

To view, print, and save these manuals, you need Adobe Reader installed on your system. See the Adobe home pageLink outside Information Center for more information about how get this free software.

Q: How do I print an individual topic (page)?
A: To print an individual topic (page) in the information center, do one of the following:
  • Click anywhere in the content pane for the topic that you want to print, and click the Print button for your browser.
  • Click anywhere in the content pane for the topic that you want to print, and from the browser File menu, select Print.

Either method allows you to print the individual topic without including the information in the left pane (the navigation tree).

Searching

Q: How do I search just one manual?
A: Use the search function in Adobe Reader to search a single manual.
  1. Download the free Adobe Reader from the Adobe home pageLink outside Information Center, if you do not have it installed.
  2. Open the PDF version of the manual.
  3. To begin a search, click the Search Find icon icon in the tool tree or click CTRL+F.

Navigating

Q: How do I navigate the information center?
A: The navigation tree (the leftmost pane) is like a table of contents. Use the navigation tree to find the information you want, then click the title of the entry that you want to see. Alternatively, you can use the search function to find a page that contains the terms that you want to find.
Q: How do I bookmark a topic?
A: To bookmark a Web page that uses frames, do the following:
  1. Right-click anywhere in the frame that you want to bookmark. A shortcut or pop-up menu opens.
  2. Select the appropriate menu item (or items) to add the topic to your bookmarks or favorites. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, you might want to retitle the bookmarked topic. Otherwise, you will replace any previous information center bookmarks.
When you use your new bookmark, your browser goes directly to the frame that you selected without going through the other frames that were used in the original window.
Q: How do I go back to a previous topic?
A: If your browser does not have a Back button, you can still go back to a previous topic. To go back to a previous topic, do one of the following:
  • Right-click anywhere in the content pane, then select Back.
  • Use the hotkey sequence defined by your browser. Many browsers use the same hotkey sequence. Press Alt + left arrow.

Troubleshooting

Q: What browsers are supported?
A: The information center includes interactive and customizable pages that require that your browser support frames, JavaScript, and cookies. Make sure that frames, JavaScript, and cookies are enabled in your browser. For more information about using JavaScript and cookies with your browser, see the help documentation provided with your browser.

You can use any of the following Web sites to download a new version of a browser that offers the functions required to use the information center:

Q: Why do some interactive pages, like advisors and planners, not work correctly?
A: The information center uses interactive and customizable pages that require storing information on your computer by using cookies. For these interactive pages to work properly, ensure that you are using a browser that supports cookies and that it has cookies enabled. For more information about how to use cookies with your browser, use the help documentation provided with your browser.

Languages and versions

Q: How do I view the information center in a different language or version?
A: Start of changeThe local language setting of your browser determines the language version of the information center content. You might have to clear your browser cache and refresh your browser view. On some browser and operating system combinations, you might have to change the regional settings of your operating system to the locale and language of your choice. For more information, see the help information provided with your browser or operating system.

Note: When the information you want to view has not been translated into your chosen language, the system displays the English version by default.

Accessing the information center

Q: Is it possible to use the information center when I cannot access the Internet?
A: Start of changeNo. Beginning with IBM® i 7.1, the IBM i Information Center is no longer available on CD-ROM and cannot be installed on your system. The only way that you can access the IBM i Information Center is through an internet connection.End of change
