The Listener is a software component that receives a stream of events and other information from an individual IBM application. It is the equivalent of an “agent” in a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) system. Listeners wait passively for Managers to connect to them and the Listeners inquire about their performance counter values. In the absence of a Manager connection, the presence of the Listener component is nearly invisible to an outside observer. Listeners are implemented in the various IBM components and products that are listed in the following sections. The Listener API is available in C++ and Java.
