Monitoring medical devices

Check that medical devices are correctly connected, and inspect the status of any queues that are holding healthcare messages.

Before you start:
  1. Create a message flow that includes a MedicalDeviceInput node, see Using data from medical devices in message flows.
  2. Connect to a broker in IBM Integration Explorer; see Managing brokers in the IBM® Integration Bus product documentation.

Use the following steps to set up monitoring for your medical devices:

  1. In IBM Integration Explorer, click Window > Reset Perspective. This step ensures that the Healthcare Operational Monitoring view is available.
  2. Switch to the Healthcare Operational Monitoring view: Click Window > Show View > Healthcare Operational Monitoring, click the Medical Device Log tab. The view displays information about connections to your medical devices.
  3. Select your broker in the drop-down list. If your broker is not displayed in the list, click Refresh Connections.
  4. View the information in the table on the Medical Device Log tab to find out about the flows and to retrieve information from all MedicalDeviceInput nodes about the status of all the connected medical devices.
  5. Optional: To filter the list of entries, in the Filter field, enter text that you want to search for. Your filter text is searched for in the all the fields of the table. The list of entries is filtered as you type.
  6. Optional: To save to a file the list of entries that are displayed in the table, click Save Log. Navigate to the directory in which you want to save the log file, enter the required name of the file in the File name field, and click Save.
  7. Optional: To remove all of the entries that are shown in the table, click Clear Log.

Interpreting the information on the Medical Device Log tab

The Medical Device Log tab contains a table that shows the state of all connected medical devices.

The table on the Medical Device Log tab is updated with status messages about the attached medical devices. The latest message is displayed in the first row. The messages can be Information, Error, or Warning messages. If the message is an Error message, a warning triangle is displayed in the first column. To receive these messages, IBM Integration Explorer must be connected to a broker. The status messages on the Medical Device Log tab are transient. Therefore, if you exit IBM Integration Explorer, all status messages are cleared. If you restart IBM Integration Explorer, you start with an empty log.

The subscription point for status messages is $SYS/Broker/+/DeviceStatus, which is case-sensitive. The plus sign (+) acts as a wildcard and can contain the broker name. For example, if your broker is called MedicalBroker the messages are published to the $SYS/Broker/MedicalBroker/DeviceStatus subscription point. The table contains the same messages that are sent from the Status terminal of the MedicalDeviceInput node. You can also use this subscription point to read status messages or to output a message box alert from your own appliance. For information about subscribing, see Subscribers and subscriptions and Publish/Subscribe User's Guide in the IBM WebSphere®Â MQ Version 7 documentation.
