Using data from medical devices in message flows

Use a MedicalDeviceInput node in a message flow to collect data from medical devices. You can develop your message flow to transfer this data to clinical applications, for example, to send to a data warehouse or to be displayed on an information dashboard.

Before you start:
You can collect data from medical devices to use in a message flow by using a MedicalDeviceInput node.

To use the data from medical devices in message flows, complete the following steps:

  1. Collect connection information about your medical devices. For example, the host name and port number for devices that are connected by LAN. You can use a MedicalDeviceInput node with medical devices that are connected by serial port or by LAN. If you use the documentation that is integrated with the IBM Integration Toolkit, you can read more information about connections to medical devices; see Medical device catalog.
  2. Create a message flow and add a MedicalDeviceInput node to the message flow. See Adding a MedicalDeviceInput node.
  3. Create a configurable service for your MedicalDeviceInput node. See Configuring a MedicalDeviceInput node. The configurable service contains the configuration information for the medical devices that the node connects to.
  4. Edit the configurable service for your MedicalDeviceInput node. See Editing the configurable service for a MedicalDeviceInput node.
    1. Add device connections to the configurable service. See Adding a device connection. A device connection contains the connection parameters of a medical device.
    2. Add measurement sets to the configurable service. See Adding a measurement set. A measurement set specifies the medical measurements that are collected from a medical device.
  5. Complete your message flow, which contains the MedicalDeviceInput node. For more information about developing message flow applications, see Developing message flow applications in the IBM Integration Bus product documentation.
  6. Deploy the configurable service for your MedicalDeviceInput node. See Deploying the configurable service for a MedicalDeviceInput node.
  7. Deploy the message flow for your MedicalDeviceInput node. See Deploying a message flow that contains a MedicalDeviceInput node.
Next:

Test and debug your message flow application to check that it works correctly. See Testing and debugging message flow applications in the IBM Integration Bus product documentation.
