Administering the workflow system

You can use the administration console to search for work items, edit workflow data and properties, and manage workflows. A workflow is one instance of a workflow definition. The workflow definition specifies a series of steps that represent a business process.

About this task

At any particular point in a workflow, a work item is the work for a workflow step that a particular step worker performs. A step worker is a workflow participant or code that processes the work item (such as a component queue adapter). Multiple work items can concurrently exist for a workflow for the following reasons:
  • A step can be processed by more than one participant.
  • Different sections of a complex workflow definition can run in parallel.

You can also use the administration console to view the event log by searching for events. Event logs contain a record of specific system- or workflow-related events for each isolated region. Recorded events include creation of a work item, user log on and log off, when a work item reaches a milestone, and many others.
