Installing and Using Model Maker

Describes how to install and use Model Maker 1.4 for IBM® Tivoli® Netcool® Performance Manager - Wireless Component.

Model Maker 1.4 greatly simplifies the task of reporting on the performance of wireless networks. Through the creation, publish, and management of common packs, Model Maker simplifies the process of publishing report packages for network Performance Management on Tivoli Common Reporting with Jazz for Service Management.

Introduction
Common packs extend technology pack data models and Summary and Busy Hour data models to Tivoli Common Reporting on Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager. After you install a technology pack, you install the corresponding common pack to enable Tivoli Common Reporting. Common packs can be delivered in the COTS program with the corresponding technology packs, or created and customized by customers and IBM Business Partners.
Software requirements and prerequisite software
Ensure that your system meets the minimum software requirements and that all prerequisite software is installed and configured before starting the installation.
Installing and configuring the Common Pack Service
Complete the following tasks to install and configure the Common Pack Service.
Installing and configuring Model Maker Manager
Model Maker Manager is a mandatory tool for Tivoli Common Reporting enablement, as it is needed during the common pack installation process. Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager administrators use Manager to manage common packs and deploy common packs to the Content Store. Common pack modelers use Manager to create common packs or to modify common pack contents.
The Base Common Pack Suite
The Base Common Pack Suite is a set of generic Base Common Packs (BCPs), some of which are mandatory requirements for working with common packs. All common packs have a dependency on at least one BCP, the TCR Time BCP. For Wireless users, BCPs provide the cross-vendor technology support provided by GOMs and GOMlets for technology packs.
Installing and configuring Model Maker Extractor (Wireless only)
Extractor is an optional tool that common pack modelers can use to browse a technology pack and extract the technology pack definition metadata, or browse a live Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager system and extract the summary or busy hour metadata. The metadata extracted is converted into a Common Intermediate Format (CIF) file (.tnpmmodel) for later processing into a data model.
Upgrading Model Maker
You can upgrade from Model Maker 1.2.0 version onwards by installing the Model Maker 1.4 version of each of the components.
Creating common packs
Creating a common pack for Common Reporting on Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager requires all Model Maker components.
Updating and extending common packs (Wireless only)
Use the following information to update and extend common packs in the common pack repository and to work with common packs on your computer.
Installing common packs
You must install each common pack, and its dependent common packs, on the Tivoli Common Reporting component of the Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager system. After you have installed the common pack for a particular technology, the common pack contents are available in the Common Reporting user interface.
Resource Metric Viewer
You can dynamically create reports by using the Resource Metric Viewer.
Data availability reporting
Data availability or data coverage describes the completeness of data for a report.
Troubleshooting Model Maker and Common Reporting
When you encounter a problem with using Model Maker components, the first thing to do is to check the detailed log files for that component. Most issues can be solved by referring to the log files.
Configuring communications between the Common Pack Service and the Common Pack Service Client
The Common Pack Service supports secure communication over the HTTP protocol between the Common Pack Service and the Common Pack Service Client. If needed, you can optionally configure secure communications.

Installing the Resource Metric Viewer as a separate installation
Currently, you can run the Common Pack Service installer without installing the Resource Metric Viewer. If you want to install the Resource Metric Viewer later as a separate installation, follow these steps.
Overriding Common Pack Service installer options
If you want to change the Common Pack Service installer options after the Common Pack Service is installed, you can manually change the properties in the global.properties file.
Creating a logins file with the appropriate passwords
You must create a logins file containing certain passwords that are required by the pack_admin command and Model Maker Manager for authentication purposes. For your security, change the default passwords provided during installation. If you update any of the passwords, ensure that you update the credentials file, or the tcraccess data source, as appropriate.
