APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Using the client option PASSWORACCESS=GENERATE, there will be
    some instances when the password expires, the client update the
    password automatically, but still got an error saying it cannot
    prompt for the password. For example, in the client dsmerror.log
     and dsmsched.log:
    
    10/25/2017 21:27:48 Password updated.
    10/25/2017 21:29:03 ANS2050E IBM Spectrum Protect needs to
    prompt for the password but cannot prompt  because the process
    is running in the background.
    
    This will cause the schedule operation to fail.
    On the IBM Spectrum Protect server activity log, similar
    messages are seen.

    This is a timing issue and the next client operation will have
    the correct password.

    7.1.8.1 and 8.1 on all platforms.
    IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection
    for VMware version 7.1.6- 7.1.8.1 and 8.1  on Microsoft Windows
    x64 and Linux x86_64 platforms.
    IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection
    for Microsoft Hyper-V version 7.1.6- 7.1.8.1 and 8.1  on
    Microsoft Windows x64 platform.

Local fix

  • The client password has been corrected automatically after the
    failure. Rerun the failing operation.

Problem conclusion

  • When password expired during active backup the client updates
    password automatically, but because of a small bug some threads
    can try to use expired password that leads to authentication
    error. To fix this issue the corresponding subroutine has been
    updated to use new password.
