Creating and describing assets

You can access the Asset Editor from projects that already exist in your workspace or from the Asset Explorer view.

Procedure

To begin creating a new asset:

  1. Open the Asset Editor by either:
    • From the Asset Explorer view, click Create a new asset; or
    • In the Eclipse toolbar, click the Create a new asset icon Create a new asset icon; or
    • In the Navigator or Project Explorer views, right-click the project and select New > Asset.
Note: If you do not already have an available project in your workspace, the New Project window will open. Name the project and click OK.
  2. If you can connect to more than one Rational® Asset Manager repository, in the Create Asset window, select the repository that you want to submit an asset to and click OK. The Asset Editor opens.
  3. On the General Details page, type a Name, Version, Short description, Community, and Type for the new asset.
  4. Depending on the Community and Type of the asset, you might see more information to enter. Community and repository administrators determine which attributes are available or required for different types of assets.
    • If the asset type includes an attribute of the Resource type (for example, an asset of the Release type typically contains an attribute for Plan Item resources on an IBM® Rational Team Concert server), to add a link to a resource on an IBM Jazz™ server (such as Rational Team Concertor Rational Requirements Composer):
      1. Next to the resource attribute, click on the drop-down menu icon.
      2. Select a Jazz server. The names of the connections that are available will depend on how the community administrator configured the connection.
      3. Because Jazz servers use a secure connection, you might have to allow Eclipse to accept information from the server. To do so, click OK.
      4. The first time that you connect to a Jazz server, you will have to enter your credentials. In the Authentication window, type your User ID and Password; then, click Log in.
      5. After you have logged in, click the drop-down menu icon again.
      6. Select the Jazz server that you logged in to.
      7. From the fly-out menu, select a project area. The specific projet areas will depend on the configuration of the Jazz server and your level of access.
      8. Next:
        • To create a link to an existing resource:
          1. From the fly-out menu from the project area, select <Resource type> Selection. The types of resources that you can search for will depend on the Jazz server and project area. A window will open.
          2. From the Type list, select or change the type of resource to search for.
          3. In the Use Work Item ID or Words Contained in the Text field, type the resource number or any part of the title. The search results are updated as you type.
          4. From the search results, select one resource; then, click OK.
        • To create a new resource such as a defect in Rational Team Concert:
          1. From the fly-out menu from the project area, select New <Resource type>. The types of resources that you will be able to make will depend on the Jazz server, the project area, and your permissions.
          2. Type or select out any required or optional information for the new resource. The types of information you will have to provide will be depend on the Jazz-based server program you are connecting to, how the project area on the server has been configured, and what type of resource you are creating.
          3. After you have entered all the required information, click OK.
      9. Repeat the above step for each resource that you want to add or create.
  5. Optional: Type a longer description in the Description field.
    CAUTION:
The rich text editor might not always mark that the asset has unsaved changes, which can result in the loss of unsaved changes if you close the asset editor. To force Eclipse to recognize that there are changes, you can press the Enter key or use one of the rich text tools such bold or italicized text.
  6. Click the Contents, Categories, or Related Assets pages of the Asset Editor to add artifacts, categories, or related assets to the new asset. See the related help topics for more information.
