The COBOL sample demonstrates how you can model binary messages that are based on COBOL copybooks, by using Data Format Description Language (DFDL). DFDL can be used to parse and serialize binary data to and from any of the IBM Integration Bus domains. For more information about the IBM Integration Bus domains, see Message domains and parsers. You can use the COBOL message models provided in this sample as a starting point for modeling your own COBOL messages.

The COBOL sample uses an application to contain the message flows, and a library to contain the DFDL schema. Resources that are contained in a library can be reused in other messaging solutions. Applications and libraries introduce a way of creating and managing resources when you are developing your messaging solutions, and during operational management.

The COBOL sample message flow, "OrderList2PurchaseData" uses a Graphical Data Map and DFDL schema models to transform a COBOL "Order List" into a COBOL "Purchase Data" message.
