Password protection

z/OS DFSMS Using Magnetic Tapes

Password protection is not as strong as RACF protection. In each of the following situations, the system ignores any password protection for a tape and uses RACF protection:
  • The volume is RACF protected
  • The volume is in an automated tape library
  • The volume is in a manual tape library

If RACF or an equivalent is not running, then the volume has no security protection
