z/OS DFSMS Software Support for IBM System Storage TS1140, TS1130, and TS1120 Tape Drives (3592)
SC23-6854-00

External Services supports the TS1140 tape drive media types, MEDIA9, MEDIA10, MEDIA11, MEDIA12, and MEDIA13, and the new recording technologies EFMT4 and EEFMT4. It also supports, for media interchange, the older recording technologies EFMT3 and EEFMT3 (on MEDIA9 and MEDIA10). Note that the TS1140 (3592 Model E07) tape drive can only read EFMT1 (on MEDIA5 through MEDIA8), EFMT2 and EEFMT2 (on MEDIA5 through MEDIA10), and EFMT3 and EEFMT3 (on MEDIA5 through MEDIA8) and, as previously indicated, only if the read-compatible special attribute indicator is set, will a TS1140 (3592-4E) device be considered eligible for the volume. The following functions are supported:
  • Change use attribute
  • Query volume residence
  • Test volume eligibility
  • Eject a volume
  • Manual cartridge entry
Note:
  • The MEDIA9 and MEDIA10 media types are supported with EFMT2 and EEFMT2 (read-only) and EFMT3, EEFMT3, EFMT4 and EEFMT4 (read-write).
  • The MEDIA11, MEDIA12, and MEDIA13 media types are valid only with the EFMT4 and EEFMT4 recording technologies.
  • The MEDIA5 through MEDIA8 media types are supported only for read requests.
  • In general, in an environment sharing the TCDB at different software levels, if a lower-level system without appropriate support attempts to perform one of the CBRXLCS functions using a volume that has EFMT4 or EEFMT4 recording technology (or has a media type of MEDIA11, MEDIA12 or MEDIA13), the request fails with existing return code LCSFAIL (12) and existing reason code LCSFNSUP (310).
