z/OS DFSMS Introduction
SC23-6851-00

Use the Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD) element of z/OS to dynamically define an I/O configuration for your system. You can define the following hardware resources with HCD:
  • Devices
  • Channels
  • Storage control units
  • ESCON® and FICON®™ switches

The number of devices that you can attach to your system depends on the hardware configuration of your processor and I/O devices, and the amount of virtual storage.
