One condition that affects which sorting technique DFSORT selects is the type of device used for intermediate storage. If you use a tape device, the Conventional technique is used, which is less efficient. For more information on using tape devices for intermediate storage, see Tape work storage devices.

The Blockset and Peerage/Vale techniques can be used only with disk work data sets. These techniques are discussed later in this section.
