>>-nnn.nnnn--PERCENT SPOOL UTILIZATION-------------------------><

The operator entered a $D N, $D Q, or $D SPOOL command. This message gives the total percent of space used from the volumes available for allocation (ACTIVE volumes). Other spool volumes may be known to JES2, but are not included in the total percent utilization (for example, volumes that have a status of DRAINING, HALTING, INACTIVE, and so on).

The utilization percentage is the last response to the $D N, $D Q, or $D SPOOL commands and can be used to gauge the quantity of work the output devices have backlogged. Large percentages of utilization tend to increase overhead in handling SYSIN/SYSOUT data. Full utilization of spool space (100%) causes processing and input of jobs to stop and generally undesirable results follow.

In the message text:
nnn.nnnn
The percentage of spool space being used.

Operator response

As a general rule, if the utilization appears high, inform the installation management so that appropriate action can be taken. The action depends on the reasons for high utilization. If the percentage approaches 100%, there are several options that can be taken:
  • Stop all readers and initiators, make sure that all available output devices are busy (route output to idle devices when possible), and inform time sharing users to release or delete their data sets.
  • Start or restart a spool volume using the $S SPOOL command to increase available spool space.
  • Use spool offload to temporarily offload work.
