When you are running under MVS™, TSO (batch and interactive), or IMS™, z/OS® XL C/C++ recognizes a UNIX file system I/O file as such if the name specified on the fopen() or freopen() call conforms to certain rules. These rules are described in How z/OS XL C/C++ determines what kind of file to open.
