Windows: Starting the server instance on Windows systems

In a production environment, the preferred method for starting the Tivoli® Storage Manager server is as a Windows service. In an environment where you are reconfiguring, testing, or completing maintenance tasks, start the server in the foreground or use maintenance mode.

Before you begin

Select one of the following methods for starting the server:
As a Windows service
This method is useful in a production environment. When you configure the server to run as a service, you can specify that the server starts automatically whenever the system is started.
In the foreground
This method is useful when you are configuring or testing the server. When you start the server in the foreground, Tivoli Storage Manager provides a special administrator user ID that is named SERVER_CONSOLE. All server messages are displayed in the foreground. The messages can be useful if you must debug startup problems.
In maintenance mode
This method is useful when you are completing maintenance or reconfiguration tasks. When you start the server in maintenance mode, you disable operations that might disrupt your maintenance or reconfiguration tasks.
