Rational Integration Tester installation topology

Understand how the IBM® Rational® Integration Tester components are installed in a typical installation topology. This topology shows the installation of Rational Integration Tester, and Rational Test Control Panel. It also shows how you can extend your performance testing and service virtualization capabilities by installing the Rational Performance Test Server and Rational Test Virtualization Server agents.

Component When do I need it? Where do I install it?
Rational Integration Tester (client) To create, modify, and run service tests, virtualization tests, and performance tests.

Additional information: With Rational Integration Tester, you get a scripting-free environment for developing tests for SOA messaging and business process integration projects. You can build tests by recording existing system behaviors or from requirements. To build tests, enter the data to send and the data that is expected in return. You can also create virtual services to remove test dependencies and enable earlier testing. Virtual services can be deployed by Rational Integration Tester to provide on-demand virtualized test environments that can support all phases of the test development lifecycle.

Any number of desktop computers or on a server. Install Rational Integration Tester on a server to run tests non-interactively, such as regression packs or scheduled tests, or as part of a Continuous Integration (CI) environment such as Jenkins.
Rational Test Control Panel To publish and store service virtualization stubs, and to schedule the execution of test suites.

Rational Test Control Panel provides a central registration point for the proxies so that multiple instances of Rational Integration Tester can find and communicate with the proxies.

Additional information: Rational Test Control Panel contains technology-specific components used by Rational Integration Tester for recording SOA message conversations, HTTP(S) and JDBC traffic, and for monitoring middleware systems under test with minimal reconfiguration of client applications. For more information, see Rational Integration Tester tool packages.

Rational Integration Tester agents.

The following installation modes are available for different test requirements:

  • Rational Test Virtualization Server agent to virtualize services, execute stubs for continuous testing, run performance tests and probes, and enable integration with IBM Rational Quality Manager.
  • Rational Performance Test Server agent mode to run performance tests and probes and to enable integration with IBM Rational Quality Manager
  • Probe mode to run probes to collect statistical test data and to enable integration with IBM Rational Quality Manager
To run performance tests and probes, for service virtualization and to enable integration with Rational Quality Manager. Any remote computers that are to be used for performance testing and service virtualization.
Note: From Rational Test Workbench version 8.7 onwards, the Rational Integration Tester Platform Pack component does not exist. All the technology-specific tool packages and the HTTP/TCP proxy components are now available with Rational Test Control Panel. For more information on the tool packages, see Rational Integration Tester tool packages.
