Some users get 'DPR-ERR-2101 Your request was invalid' error when changing Standard Report (from HTML) to PDF or XLS, caused by Internet Explorer trust settings

Troubleshooting

Problem

User runs a standard report (for example a Reconcile - Intercompany Balances report). This displays OK (by default using HTML). User then clicks the button to change the report output to PDF (or XLS). An error appears.

DPR-ERR-2101 Your request was invalid. Please contact your administrator.

Cause

There are several known causes for this message.

  • For more examples, see separate IBM Technote #2007559.

This IBM Technote specifically relates to the scenario where the cause is that the end user's Internet Explorer (IE) settings are such that IE does not trust the Controller application server sufficiently to download the requested information (from the Cognos BI/engine Report Server's website).

Resolving The Problem

Reconfigure the end user's Windows user profile so that Internet Explorer fully trusts the Report Server (the Cognos BI server/engine that is powering the standard reports).

Steps:
TIP: For more details on the following steps, see separate IBM Technote #1984087.

1. Logon to the Controller application server, as an administrator
2. Launch 'Controller Configuration' from the start menu
3. Open 'Report Server' section
4. Make a note of the value of the 'Report Server' (for example 'http://myserver.mycompany.com/ibmcognos/cgi-bin/cognos.cgi'):

=============================================
VITALLY IMPORTANT: You *must* ensure that the name of the server (that you use in the steps below) is typed exactly as per the value inside 'Controller Configuration' (see above).

=============================================

Then ask the 'bad' end user to perform the following steps:

5. Logon to 'bad' client device as the end user (the Windows user who receives the error)
6. Launch Internet Explorer
7. Click 'Tools - Internet Options'
8. Click 'Security' tab then 'trusted sites'
9. Click 'sites' and add the report server's website name WITHOUT the extra virtual directories at the end (for example: http://myserver.mycompany.com ):

10. Untick the box "Require server verification..." and save changes

11. Now highlight “Trusted Sites” again
12. Click “Custom Level”
13. Change ‘Reset to’ to “Medium-Low
14. Click “Reset”

15. Click “yes” to confirm the change
16. In order to enable Windows Single Sign On (SSO) now scroll down to the bottom of the option list, and select "Automatic logon with current user name and password":

17. Click OK, OK.
18. Test.
