Gmail Account Setup: Things To Check Before Setting Up Gmail In Notes Client
Receiving Protocol Error Messages
SSL protocol migration to TLS, Enhanced Security Layer Feature in Gmail
Diagnosing the problem
Gmail had made changes on their security layer and optimized some settings on their mail preferences. Some identified causes of these errors being returned are: gmail migrated from SSLv3 to TLS, disabled POP3/IMAP on gmail settings and turned off less secure app in gmail.
Resolving the problem
1. Gmail migration from SSLv3 to TLS.
WORK AROUND: Check the notes version. Make sure that the notes version is supporting TLS, if not working on SSLv3 versions. Development team had released fix packs of notes in 8.5.3 / 9.0.1 that support TLS.
TLS Supportability for 8.5.3 version
TLS Supportability for 9.0.1 version
2. POP3 or IMAP is enabled in GMAIL account setting
There is a section in Gmail settings that prohibits the enablement of POP3 or IMAP. Make sure that either of these two is enabled depending on the preferred set up.
Go to Gmail > Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP
3. Make sure that setting for less secure apps is turned on. Notes will always return an error when this setting is turned off.
Go to GMAIL > My Account > Sign-in and Security > Connected apps and sites > turn on the button for less secure apps.
