How to upgrade your version of Cognos Analytics

Question & Answer

Question

How do we upgrade our Cognos Analytics Environment to a higher release?

Answer

You can upgrade your version of Cognos Analytics by performing an "over the top" installation. This is the default upgrade method and the simplest and easiest way to upgrade Cognos Analytics. All components are upgraded to a newer version using the same configuration details, ports, themes and extensions as your previous installation.

This document will describe how to perform an "over the top" upgrade.

Backup your Environment

Before you start it is important to make a full backup of your Cognos Environment on all servers.

- Content Store - Using your Database Management Tools while the system is offline, Please make a Full Back up of your Content Store.
- In Cognos Administration do a Full Content Store Export Deployment.

Minimize upgrade duration

During installation, the [Cognos Install]\deployment and the [Cognos Install]\data\search folders will be moved twice, which can cause the installer to appear as though it has stopped working. As these folders are often very large, it is advisable to move them to a location outside the Cognos Analytics installation folder prior to applying the update, then move them back after the update has completed, prior to restarting Cognos Analytics.

Temporarily disable virus scanners or anti-malware products

During installation, many files will be updated and moved. Real-time virus scanners and anti-malware products (including Windows Defender) can hold files in a locked state which causes the installer to appear as though it has stopped working. Also, when upgrading outside of business hours, it is possible that a scheduled scan may occur during the installation, which can also have this effect. It is advisable to temporarily disable these products in the Cognos Analytics environment for the duration of the installation process in order to minimise installation delays

Preserving Customized Files

The Cognos Analytics upgrade process automatically preserves your configuration data when upgrading. However if you have customized your environment you will need to check the documentation to ensure that the files and directories you have customized are going to be preserved.

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cognos-analytics/11.0.0?topic=process-preserved-files-folders-when-upgrading-cognos-analytics (11.0.x)
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cognos-analytics/11.1.0?topic=analytics-preserved-files-folders-when-upgrading-cognos (11.1.x)

If they are not listed then back them up manually.

In version 11.0.6 onwards it is possible to specify exactly which files and directories are preserved using the preserve.txt file. Further details on this are in the link above.
