Supportability Q&A about IBM Notes and OS X 10.10.x

News

Abstract

This technote contains questions and answers pertaining to installing and running IBM Notes on Apple's OS X 10.10.x Yosemite. This document now covers a later Mac 9.0.1 slipstream from May 2015 that adds v2 signing which prevents warnings under OS X 10.10 and 10.9.5 both during install and when running with Mac firewall enabled.

Q1. Does IBM Notes support Apple's OS X 10.10 Yosemite?
Yes.

Q2. What versions of Notes will be supported on Apple's OS X 10.10 Yosemite?
  • IBM Notes 9.0.1 slipstream with 9.0.1 Fix Pack 2 or above is required for support. Prior releases, including Notes 8.5.x, are not supported.
  • A slipstream is a re-release of an existing package. In this instance, the 9.0.1 IBM Notes Mac installer was modified to function on Yosemite and the 9.0.1 package was re-posted under new part numbers. (See Q5 for the new part numbers.)

Q3. What steps do I take to install Notes on a new Yosemite computer?
-- Step 1: Install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572
-- Step 2: Download and install the Mac IBM Notes 9.0.1 slipstream, which will be released by end of day on Thursday, October 16, 2014 (see download information below).
-- Step 3: Install Notes 9.0.1 Fix Pack 2 or higher

Q4. If I already have Notes 9.0.1 installed, do I need to re-install the slipstream?
No. The slipstream is needed only to avoid the following error message, which occurs when installing Notes 9.0.1 for the first time on a Mac running OS X 10.10 Yosemite:

"IBM Notes 9.0.1 Social Edition can't be installed on this computer. This can only be installed on Mac OS X 10.6 or above. Current OS Version is too low."

Q5. Where can I download the Mac slipstream version of Notes 9.0.1?
  • The Notes 9.0.1 slipstream can be downloaded from IBM Passport Advantage Online and Partner downloads under the part numbers listed below. This slipstream was modified on Tuesday, May 5th 2015 (original slipstream was posted on Thursday, October 16, 2014).
  • IBM Connections Cloud and IBM SmartCloud Notes customers, refer to the following FAQ document for download instructions: FAQ: Software downloads for IBM SmartCloud Notes customers.

Q6. Where can I download latest Sametime release that supports Yosemite?
For details on where to download the latest Sametime package, see technote 1688304 and follow the link for "Sametime Clients" in the table.

  • IBM Notes 9.0.1 slipstream 1 (superseded by slipstream 2, see below) was released October 16, 2014 to coincide with the Fall release of OS X 10.10. The slipstream remedied an IBM Notes 9.0.1 install issue that results in the following error and prevents 9.0.1 from installing:
"IBM Notes 9.0.1 Social Edition can't be installed on this computer. This can only be installed on Mac OS X 10.6 or above. Current OS Version is too low."
  • To avoid the version signature warning, the Notes 9.0.1 slipstream (and fix packs prior to 9.0.1 Fix Pack 3) should be installed by (1) control clicking IBM Notes Installer.mpkg app icon, and then by (2) selecting "Open". These steps are used to exempt Developer ID signature protection from a unidentified developer. For more information about signed apps, refer to Apple Article ID HT5290 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290). This issue was addressed in 9.0.1 Slipstream 2 and 9.0.1 Fix Pack 3 by moving to Apple version 2 signatures.
  • IBM Notes 9.0.1 slipstream 2 was released May 5, 2015 and added Apple V2 signing to avoid a signature warning. Prior to this slipstream the package was signed with Apple version 1 signatures that would result in a warning installing on OS X 10.10 or OS X 10.9.5. The items fixed in this slipstream are as follows:
    • SPR# HANA9MVK4K - Mac V2 signing required for OS X 10.10 / 10.9.5. This would result in the following message on a Macintosh during install: '"IBM Notes Installer.mpkg" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.'
    • SPR# TBAY9MPSAL - Mac install kits have unsigned Java files resulting in the following message from the Apple Macintosh Firewall feature: 'Do you want the application "Eclipse" to accept incoming network connections?'
