No menu item appears after installing Microsoft Excel import for Rational Quality Manager

Technote (troubleshooting)

This technote explains a problem where a menu item does appear after installing Microsoft Excel import for IBM Rational Quality Manager.

The Excel importer for Rational Quality Manger is a plug in for Microsoft Excel. When successfully installed it should add a menu item in Excel in order for you to import Excel documents into Rational Quality Manager. However, there can be instances in which the install concludes with no apparent errors, yet no menu item appears.

Resolving the problem

One possible cause of this behavior is a setting in Excel that disallows plug-ins. To check if this setting is enabled perform the following steps

  1. Open the instance of Microsoft Excel that is having the issue.
  2. Go to the menu option Help > About Microsoft Excel.
  3. Click the Disabled Items... button.
  4. Check for any entries in the Disable Items window that would prohibit the install of an add-in or plug-in. See the screenshot for an example. If one exists, re-enable it

Once this is complete, install the Rational Quality Manager Excel importer again. The menu should now appear
