Running Rational Application Developer on Windows 7 64-bit as a non-admin user results in permission problems

Problem(Abstract)

Permission problems are shown when running IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software 8.0 and the WebSphere Application Server 6.1 or 7.0 test environment on Windows 7 64-bit as non-Administrative user.

Symptom

You notice the following behavior as normal (non-administrative account) user:

  • Cannot create a new profile via menu Window > Preferences, preference page Servers > WebSphere Application Server, click on Run Profile Management Tool

    java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SDP8\runtimes\base_v7\bin\ProfileManagement\bin\PMT" (in directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SDP8\runtimes\base_v7\bin\ProfileManagement\bin"): CreateProcess error=740, Der angeforderte Vorgang erfordert erhöhte Rechte.java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SDP8\runtimes\base_v7\bin\ProfileManagement\bin\PMT" (in directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SDP8\runtimes\base_v7\bin\ProfileManagement\bin"): CreateProcess error=740, Der angeforderte Vorgang erfordert erhöhte Rechte.

  • Profile management tool shows an error message "Profile creation failed".

    <SDP>\runtimes\<WAS-HOME>\logs\manageprofiles\<PROFILENAME>-create.log.

    The exception message is: java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SDP\runtimes\base_v61\profiles\AppSrv02\bin\EARExpander.bat


  • When starting Rational Application Developer, an error message like this is shown

Cause

You installed Rational Application Developer 8.0 on Windows 7 64-bit into the directory C:\Program Files (x86). This directory is only accessible as administrator.


You need to start Rational Application Developer and programs delivered with WebSphere Application Server with elevated permissions via Run as administrator.

Note: The following warning message was displayed during the installation of Rational Application
Developer 8.0 on Windows 7:

Resolving the problem

Reinstall the software into the appropriate directory for your environment.

For example, if you want to run Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software as a user without Administrator privileges, you need to choose an installation directory which is not located within C:\Program Files (x86), such as C:\IBM.
