IBM Support

Retry logic when attempting to contact SNMP subagent

Question & Answer

Question

How many times does a Tivoli Storage Manager server attempt to contact the Tivoli Storage Manager SNMP subagent (dsmsnmp) before disabling SNMP alerts?

Answer

A Tivoli Storage Manager server will try to connect to a SNMP subagent 10 times during startup. The interval between retries is specified by the SNMPHEARTBEATINTERVAL parameter in the Tivoli Storage Manager server option file (dsmserv.opt). Once all retries have been exhausted, the connection fails, and no more retries will be attempted by the Tivoli Storage Manager server. The following messages will appear in the Tivoli Storage Manager activity log:

12/28/2011 09:45:17 ANR8214E Session open with 127.0.0.1 failed due to connection refusal.
12/28/2011 09:45:17 ANR4670W Failure in opening session with SNMP subagent.
12/28/2011 09:45:17 ANR4664W Failure in registering with SNMP subagent.

To prevent this problem, start the Tivoli Storage Manager SNMP subagent prior to Tivoli Storage Manager server startup.
