Lotus Notes Standard client hangs intermittently through out the day

When users are working throughout the day, they would notice that the mini view goes blank on the left hand side bottom, also when they click on the open tabs the view is empty which was displayed before.
The only way out is to shut down the client from the process list and restart.


You will see the mini view go blank and from the process list nlnotes.exe will be missing.


This is caused by the Recent contacts feature. When ever the client is trying to parse a Double Byte email address to add in the Recent contacts view, nlnotes.exe crashes and thus hangs the notes client.

This will usually be seen for users who receive or send emails in Japanese and Chinese that contain these Double Byte Characters. For Example

"User,Test (박경원, test)" <>

Resolving the problem

This issue is fixed in 8.5.1 Fix Pack 4 and 8.5.2.

Disable the recent contacts feature from the preferences so the client does not add them automatically.
