Delivery of iCalendar invitation fails with error "Field is too large (32K) or View's column & selection formulas are too large"

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem

When we convert incoming iCalendar messages to Notes messages by the router, Domino performs a name lookup on the attendees SMTP addresses in an effort to convert these addresses to Notes addresses. For SMTP addresses not represented in the domino directory, we leave the SMTP address. The root of the problem was that the fields on the note that are written with these Notes addresses are greater than the 32K limit, even though the SMTP address representation was UNDER the 32K limit.

As a result, the message will get stuck in mail.box and continue to loop. Mail.box will continue to attempt to route the message every 24 hours (default), and the follow errors will be displayed on the server console.

iCalendar: Logging conversion of request from non-Notes source. Product ID: Microsoft CDO for Microsoft Exchange
Router: Unable to deliver message XXXXXXXX, to UserA from UserB
Field is too large (32K) or View's column & selection formulas are too large

Symptom

When view the server console, you will continue to see the following messages:
iCalendar: Logging conversion of request from non-Notes source. Product ID: Microsoft CDO for Microsoft Exchange
Router: Unable to deliver message XXXXXXXX, to UserA from UserB
Field is too large (32K) or View's column & selection formulas are too large

These messages will be generated every time the router attempts to deliver the message. By default this will be every 24 hours

Resolving the problem

This issue is fixed in 8.5.1 Fix Pack 4 and 8.5.2.

Fix details: SPR# NRBY7WZHLZ

Refer to the Upgrade Central site for details on upgrading Notes/Domino.

Workaround
Currently, there are only two options that can be taken to work around this issue. Please know the message will not be delivered so these options will only prevent the router from trying to re-send the message causing multiple delivery failure notices and also prevent the error message from being logged repeatedly.

1) Delete the message from mail.box

- or -

2) Use the RouterDeliveryRetrySubset=1 NOTES.INI parameter, which causes Router to return to the sender messages that it cannot deliver or transfer immediately, instead of waiting for a 24-hour Retry period to expire. This parameter will also remove the message from mail.box which will prevent the 24-hour retry.

In one case, the following steps resolved the issue as well.

1. Edit the document in the mail.box
2. Copy the contents of the recipients field
3. Delete the contents of the recipients field
4. Paste the contents back into the recipients field
5. Save and close the document
6. Restart the router or wait for the message to be retried

This will route the message, but the delivered date will appear as the time that step #5 above was completed rather than the time the original message was sent.
