IBM Support

"Visual Studio 2005 IDE is not open" error message appears when trying to import a Microsoft Visual Studio .NET project into Rational Modeling Extensions for .NET

Troubleshooting

Problem

If you use IBM Rational Modeling Extensions for .NET v7.5.1 to import an open Microsoft Visual Studio .NET v2008 solution, you may get the error "Visual Studio 2005 IDE is not open".

Symptom

Attempts to use IBM Rational Modeling Extensions for .NET v7.5.1 to import an open Microsoft Visual Studio .NET v2008 solution, may result in the following error:

"Visual Studio 2005 IDE is not open"

This error will prevent you from importing the solution, even though Visual Studio v2008 is supported with Rational Modeling Extensions v7.5.1 and it is in fact open.

Cause

Rational Modeling Extensions support for Visual Studio v2008 was introduced in v7.5.1.

Version 7.5.1 still supports Visual Studio v2005 as well and it is this Visual Studio version that Rational Modeling Extensions selects by default.

Therefore, if you have Visual Studio v2008 open instead of v2005, Rational Modeling Extensions will raise the error message.

Resolving The Problem

The following steps will solve the problem:

  1. Go to Window > Preferences > Modeling > .NET Modeling
  2. Select the Visual Studio 2008 radio button in the Which Visual Studio IDE frame (By default, Visual Studio 2005 is selected) and do an Apply/OK
  3. Import the required Visual Studio v2008 solution
