Testing mail server connection: [ERROR] Mail server authentication failed

Troubleshooting


Problem

While testing the notification email settings in Cognos Configuration, the test fails due to the below error.

Symptom

[ERROR] Mail server authentication failed

Environment

Exchange mail server

Resolving The Problem

The fully qualified domain name is not resolving to the IP address. As well, the username/password client was using as the mail server logon credentials in Cognos connection was not seen in the Global Address List. Client was using an administrator email account not in the global address list.

Steps:
  1. Change the SMTP mail server from <fully qualified domain):25 to <internal IP address for the mail server>:25
  2. Confirm that the user being used to login to the mail server is on the Global Address List.
