Deleting latest database snapshot from volume history

Question & Answer

Question

Why does an attempt to remove the most current database snapshot (dbs) with a delete volume history command fail?

Cause

The latest dbs entry cannot be deleted to protect against not having a backup to recover from.

Answer

The delete volume history command will not delete the last database snapshot entry. This is by design to prevent the accidental loss of what may be the only means of recovering the server. Even if a more current standard database backup (full or incremental) exists, the latest database snapshot will not be deleted as these two database types are not related.

A query volhist type=dbs todate=today may show a single entry for one database snapshot. An attempt to delete this entry using delete volhist * type=dbs todate=today results in no deletions from the volume history:
ANR2467I DELETE VOLHISTORY: 0 sequential volume history entries were successfully delete.
