    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: IBM HTTP Server startup may fail on *
    * Windows with an error_log entry of *
    *  'master_main: create child process failed.'                 *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply this fix if IBM HTTP Server cannot be *
    * started on the Windows operating system and the error log *
    * has no more specific error than: *

    IBM HTTP Server startup failurs on Windows.

Problem conclusion

  • The cause of the startup failure was a crash in the C runtime
    while replacing the value of an environment variable.
    Internally, the OS is trying to free the memory of the old
    environment variable value, but the way IBM HTTP Server was
    creating the new entries, each value was not necessarily its
    own individually allocated storage. IBM HTTP Server
    was updated to allocate each individual value separately.

    This fix is targeted for IHS fixpacks:
     - 7.0.0.21
     - 8.0.0.2
