PK49945: Reformatvob -load fails when VOB server is not also registry ser ver

APAR status

• Closed as Permanent restriction.

Error description

• When migrating VOBs to a ClearCase 7.0 machine, where the
  registry is not on the machine where the VOBs are being
  loaded, the reformatvob -load fails with the following error:
  db_loader: Error: Process not running on registry specified
             hostname (?registry host name?)
  db_loader: Error: Cannot open database in
             '/vobstore/move_vob.vbs/db.reformat': db_loader:
             Error: Error from libdb (1)
  cleartool: Error: Could not load database.
  cleartool: Error: Trouble loading versioned object base
             /vobstore/move_vob.vbs
  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Set up two ClearCase machines.  Only the machine where
     the VOBs are being moved to needs to be on ClearCase 7.0
     or greater.  The registry server needs to be on the machine
     the VOBs are being moved from (or at least not on the
     machine the VOBs are being  moved to).
  2) Run 'cleartool reformatvob -dump' on one of the VOBs on
     the from machine.
  3) Move the VOB's .vbs directory to the to machine and run
     'cleartool reformatvob -load' on the vbs directory of the
     VOB that has been moved
  4) The following error should result:
  db_loader: Error: Process not running on registry specified
             hostname (?registry host name?)
  db_loader: Error: Cannot open database in
             '/vobstore/move_vob.vbs/db.reformat': db_loader:
             Error: Error from libdb (1)
  cleartool: Error: Could not load database.
  cleartool: Error: Trouble loading versioned object base
             /vobstore/move_vob.vbs
  Workaround:
  The workaround is to drop back to ClearCase 2003.06, or make
  the machine where the VOBs are being loaded a registry server.

Problem conclusion

• After analysis of this APAR, we have determined that it must
  remain a product restriction for some time into the future.
  A priority decision has been made that this defect cannot be
  addressed in a reasonable amount of time without neglecting
  issues of higher importance.
  We do expect, however, that this restriction will be lifted
  in a future version as a result of some major planned
  changes. Meanwhile, we recommend one of the following
  workarounds:
  1) If you are moving the VOB, unregister the VOB before
  running reformatvob -load. Since the VOB has a new location,
  it needs to be unregistered and re-registered anyway.
  2) If you are copying the VOB to use it as a test
  environment, use a standalone host.
