Error description

  • After installing Rational Developer for System z V9.1.1.4
fixpak, the RDz users started experiencing intermittent
connection failures in the CARMA Endevor access. The abrupt loss
of the CARMA connection eventually causes the RSED
server to go down which then has to be recycled.

When it works, the rsecomm log shows:

    2017.03.08 08:37:31:992 EST PID:50397237 THREAD:2CF6F0000000002F

    'SYSV.IBM.FEK.V9R1M1.#CUST.CNTL(CRASUBCA)'

When it fails, the rsecomm log shows that clistName is empty:

    ****************************************************************
01.Developer for z Systems CARMA server loops on invoking CA
Endevor when the SHOWVIEW DD is not defined.
02.Developer for z Systems enhancement to specify a connect
timeout for the CARMA connection via variable
       connect.timeout in CRASRV.properties. The default is 60
seconds, which matches the default before this enhancement.
    03.In a multi-processor environment, concurrent requests for
CRASRV.properties data causes values to be not properly
       retrieved.
04.The Developer for z Systems (RDz/IDz) CARMA installation
verification program (IVP) mentions the default timeout
value in the following message, not the actual value.

       1. Creating CARMA connection (timeout after 60 seconds)

Problem conclusion

  • 01.The IBM IDz Endevor integration has been changed to make the
SHOWVIEW DD optional instead of required.
02.The CARMA component is being changed to allow the systems
administrator to be able to specify a connect timeout value.
03.Changes have been made in CARMA to provide better
synchronization of the retrieval of the CRASRV.properties
       values.
04.The CARMA component is updated to show the actual connect
       timeout value.
