    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * APAR PH05193 provides Db2 exploitation                       *
    * for Coupling Facility (CF) *
    * asynchronous cross-invalidation (XI).                        *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * Apply corrective PTF when available *
    ****************************************************************
    The asynchronous cross-invalidation (XI) feature is primarily
    aimed at the problem of elongated Coupling Facility (CF)
    requests in a sysplex where distance is involved.
    Specifically, when one Db2 member writes changed pages to a
    group buffer pool and XI signals need to travel over long CF
    link distances for invalidation of buffers in Db2 members
    residing in other systems in the same sysplex that are 'KMs
    or 10's of KMs away. In these cases, the elapsed time of the
    GBP write can be quite long and also quite unpredictable.

Problem conclusion

  • A new asynchronous XI capability for Db2 group buffer pools
    is provided for z/OS 2.2 or 2.3 systems with APAR OA54688
    installed and the CF cache structure is allocated in a
    CFLEVEL 23 or higher.

    In this APAR, Db2 provides exploitation of this
    asynchronous XI feature for cross invalidations of data pages
    when the table space is not using row-level locking and
    invalidation is done when writing updated pages during commit.

    A new DSNB818I message will be issued by the DISPLAY
    GROUPBUFFERPOOL command which included the MDETAIL option when
    asynchronous XIs were performed.

    A new reason code 00C20225 will be issued when Db2 receives
    an unexpected error from MVS, which detected an invalid
    parameter on an IXLAXISN request from Db2.

    Three new counters QBGLWX, QBGLSU, and QBGLAS are created for
    the IFCID 2 trace records.
    QBGLWX - number of IXLCACHE requests with asynchronous XIs
    QBGLSU - number of IXLAXISN service calls
    QBGLAS - number of IXLAXISN suspends waiting for asynchronous
             XIs to complete

    A new counter QBFAAS is created for the IFCID 3 trace records.
    QBGAAS - number of IXLAXISN suspends waiting for asynchronous
             XIs to complete

    A new function ID 8 (QW0252F8) is created for the IFCID 252
    trace records. A QW0252F8 record indicates that the IXLAXISN
    service was invoked to determine whether asynchronous XIs have
    completed.

    Please refer to ++HOLD DOC change for more information.

    Note that Db2's use of asynchronous XI is initially disabled
    in this APAR. If users want to enable it, please contact IBM
    for further instructions.
