Error description

  • Mails with invalid characters (non-printable/non-visible) that
are zeroes are keeping some mails from syncing to devices that
use WBXML encoding of data because WBXML uses zeroes as field
terminators. Most of the currently supported devices use WBXML
encoding of data during syncs and will have varying responses to
the unexpected zeroes based on other data around it and their
own implementation. This work around for the zero bytes is to
just remove them. Most mail generators should not be using
zeroes in the data, so this should be a rare situation.

Local fix

  • Delete the mail or move it to a non-syncing folder.

Problem summary

  • Encoded content with non-rintable zero character causes and
issue for WBXML decoders. This content is not allowed for WBXML
encoding and requires special handling since some documents have
    been found to contain.

Problem conclusion

  • The IBM Traveler server has been updated to handle this error
    case with DBXML encoding.
