APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • The user suffered "SOL payload already active on another
    session" although previous IPMI SoL session got closed in
    terminal and even the appliance was powercycled. The issue
    happened after using "ipmiutil" if omitting the manual SoL
    deactivate and then subsequently messing up the SoL state with
    additional SoL activate attempts.
    No such issue happened if using "ipmitool" to activate SoL
    sessions and then just cancel away related terminal windows -
    after about a minute grace period the SoL session could be
    activated again even if forgot to cleanly deactivate it
    initially if using "ipmitool".
    

Local fix

  • Use "ipmitool" which automatically deactivates the SoL session
    before closing it.
    OR
    Ensure to always first deactivate the SoL session if using
    "ipmiutil" to ensure no active session is lost open.
    OR
    With recent releases, if access to SSH or physical Serial
    Console, one can issue CLI commands "top; diag; bmc-reset cold"
    and wait 5 minutes for the BMC to reset itself and reload
    which also releases the lost SoL session.
