APAR status

Error description

  • Error Description: The performance of the reclamation phase of
    local protect can perform slower than expected. This is due to
    the fact that there is only one thread per volume being
    reclaimed. So, if the other volumes being reclaimed finish, and
    there is only one volume left being reclaimed, it will only have
     one thread available to it, thus slowing the overall
    performance of the operation.
    
    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: 7.1.x and 8.1.x on all
    supported platforms
    
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:Review the QUERY VOLUME output to see if
    there is one volume that has significantly more to reclaim than
    other tape volumes. If there is, then that volume would be left
    by itself during the reclaim phase and the slow down would be
    evident. Additionally, instrumentation tracing shows only one of
    these threads (SdReplicateCntr) active at a time.

Local fix

  • Increasing the reclamation threshold (for example, original
    setting of 80 to 85 or 90) should reduce the amount of data to
    reclaim on eligible tape volumes daily, but this will negatively
     affect how quickly tapes return to scratch.  With this approach
     the reclamation threshold should occasionally (for example
    weekly) be reduced back to previous levels or lower (for
    example, original setting of 80 increased to 85, but then
    reduced to 75), to allow reclamation to better process a backlog
     for a period of time.  Then on completion of the lower
    reclamation levels, the reclamation threshold can be increased
    again for smaller daily processing (for example, back to 85).
