Error description

  • After an upgrade of the client to versions 7.1.8 or 8.1.4, or
higher, the systemstate backup fails on the passive node of a
    Microsoft Windows cluster.
This problem happens because a VSS writer points to some files
which are located on a cluster disk, which is not available on
    the passive node.
With pre-7.1.8/8.1.4 client levels, the client option
SKIPMISSINGSYSWFILE YES allowed to skip those missing objects
and let the systemstate backup run to completion.
The missed files were then reported in the dsmerror.log with a
    message like this:
"ANS4199W File 'file name' is not backed up as part of the
system state because cluster disk 'volume name' is not
    accessible."

Now, after the upgrade to client version 7.1.8 or 8.1.4, or
higher - the errors below are reported and the systemstate
backup fails even in case the SKIPMISSINGSYSWFILE YES option is
    being used.

Local fix

  • Roll-back to a previews client level, for example 7.1.6 or
8.1.2, and if a backup took place with the 7.1.8 / 8.1.4 level,
restart a backup from scratch ( by deleting or renaming the
filespaces at the IBM Spectrum Protect server side ) or use a
    new nodename.

Problem conclusion

  • The system state backup can fail when a cluster disk (that
contains some system files) is not available on the passive node
of a MS Windows cluster. The code has been changed so that
system state backup will skip the missing files from unavailable
cluster disk and let the bacukp run to completion.
