Error description

  • IBM Spectrum Protect server might fail a CONVERT STGPOOL process
    with the following messages:

    01/31/2017 09:39:03 ANR8340I FILE volume
    <DRIVE>:\<DIRECTORY>\<VOLUME>.BFS mounted.
    01/31/2017 09:39:03 ANR0512I Process 629 opened input
    volume <DRIVE>:\DIRECTORY\<VOLUME>.BFS.
    01/31/2017 09:49:06 ANR8333I FILE volume
<DRIVE>:\<DIRECTORY>\<VOLUME>.BFS is mounted R/O, status: IN
    USE.
    01/31/2017 09:50:29 ANR0515I Process 629 closed volume
    <DRIVE>:\DIRECTORY\<VOLUME>.BFS.
    01/31/2017 12:39:11 ANR1153W Move data process terminated
for volume <DRIVE>:\<DIRECTORY>\<VOLUME>.BFS - lock conflict.

The symptom can be seen if a huge object is processed and the
CONVERT process has the container open for longer than
    configured with the CONTAINERRESOURCETIMEOUT.

Under the APAR condition, the dsmffdc.log file will have an
    additional message that reports:
    [01-31-2017 12:39:11.246][ FFDC_GENERAL_SERVER_ERROR ]:
(sdbuf.c:806) Resource timeout while waiting for empty buffer.
    txnP 000000319E927510

The ANR1153W message reported is misleading and needs correction
so an administrator is pointed to adjust the
    CONTAINERRESOURCETIMEOUT option.
This APAR can not make the CONVERT STGPOOL complete successfully
as a defined limit is reached.

Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: 7.1.6 and newer on
    all supported platforms
      Initial Impact: Low
      Additional Keywords: dedup TSM

Local fix

  • increase the CONTAINERRESOURCETIMEOUT to allow the process to
    complete

Problem conclusion

  • This problem was fixed.
Affected platforms for reported release: AIX, Solaris, Linux,
    and Windows.
Platforms fixed: AIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows.

When this condition is encountered a new message will be issued:

ANR3691E The transaction failed for process [process name],
process number [process number], because of a transaction
    timeout.

    Message Explanation:
The server ended the database update transaction for the
    specified
process because the transaction was not committed within the
timeout period. The timeout period is controlled by the
    CONTAINERRESOURCETIMEOUT
    option.

    System Action:
The specified process ended, but server operation continues.

    User Response:
To resolve the issue, complete the following steps:
    1. Determine why the operation did not commit the transaction
    within the specified time.
    2. If necessary, increase the timeout period. For example, to
set a timeout period of 4 hours, specify the following option:
    containerresourcetimeout 240

    example:

ANR3691E The transaction failed for process CONVERT STGPOOL,
process number 8, because of a transaction timeout.
