Error description

  • The IBM Spectrum Protect CONVERT STGPOOL process might end with
    a failure message without providing details on the root cause:

    A review of the actlog for the convert process messages does not
    give any further details that would explain what went wrong.
    Under the APAR condition, the following will be reported in the
    dsmffdc.log file for the CONVERT process:
    [12-01-2016 14:25:16.402][ FFDC_GENERAL_SERVER_ERROR ]:
    (sdbuf.c:804) Resource timeout while waiting for empty buffer.

    A review of the actlog around the 14:25 timeframe does not give
    any error messages related to the convert process 315.
    
    The symptom was seen when processing very large objects and the
    server failed to allocate space for the object to process within
    the RESOURCETIMEOUT limit.
    Server messaging should be changed to allow identifying the root
    cause of the symptom.
    
      Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: 7.1.6 and newer
      Customer/L2 Diagnostics (If Applicable) review the dsmffdc.log
    file for resource timeout messages
      Initial Impact: Low
      Additional Keywords: TSM container
    

Local fix

  • increase the timeout if the resource timeout message is in the
    dsmffdc.log file:
    - prior to 7.1.7, the timeout was governed by the
    RESOURCETIMEOUT, so increase the RESOURCETIMEOUT.
    - starting with 7.1.7 and later, it is now governed by
    CONTAINERRESOURCETIMEOUT which has a default of 180 mins
