Error description

  • If a Tivoli Storage Manager / IBM Spectrum Protect server
    storage pool migration triggers reclamation to prevent from
    actual migration being required, the processes can hang if the
    same volume is selected as input volume for one process and
    output volume for the other.
    In the examples below
    <SOMEVOLUME> refers to arbitrary different volumes
    <VOLUMEXXX> represents the same volume

    The activity log reports something like:
    <TIMESTAMP> ANR0984I Process 612 for MIGRATION started in the
    BACKGROUND at 06:10:59 AM. (PROCESS: 612)
    <TIMESTAMP> ANR1000I Migration process 612 started for storage
    pool <POOLNAME> automatically, highMig=15, lowMig=5,
    duration=None. (PROCESS: 612)
    <TIMESTAMP> ANR1040I Space reclamation started for volume
    <SOMEVOLUME>, storage pool <POOLNAME> (process number 612).
    (PROCESS: 612)
    ..
    <TIMESTAMP> ANR0984I Process 613 for MIGRATION started in the
    BACKGROUND at 06:10:59 AM. (PROCESS: 613)
    <TIMESTAMP> ANR1000I Migration process 613 started for storage
    pool <POOLNAME> automatically, highMig=15, lowMig=5,
    duration=None. (PROCESS: 613)
    ..
    <TIMESTAMP> ANR8340I FILE volume <VOLUMEXXX> mounted. (PROCESS:
    612)
    <TIMESTAMP> ANR0513I Process 612 opened output volume
    <VOLUMEXXX>. (PROCESS: 612)
    ..
    <TIMESTAMP> ANR1044I Removable volume <VOLUMEXXX> is required
    for space reclamation. (PROCESS: 613)

    Under the APAR condition, Q PROC then reports:
         612     Migration Volume <SOMEVOLUME>
                            (storage pool <POOLNAME>), Moved Files:
    55,
                            Moved Bytes: 14,393 MB, Deduplicated
    Bytes: 0
                            bytes, Unreadable Files: 0, Unreadable
    Bytes: 0
                            bytes. Current Physical File (bytes):
    None
                            Current input volume:
    /data/tsm1rz1/tsm1rz1_stg-
                            32/diskpool135.dsm. Current output
    volume(s):
                            <VOLUMEXXX>.
         613     Migration Volume <SOMEVOLUME>
                            (storage pool <POOLNAME>), Moved Files:
    89,
                            Moved Bytes: 15,398 MB, Deduplicated
    Bytes: 0
                            bytes, Unreadable Files: 0, Unreadable
    Bytes: 0
                            bytes. Current Physical File (bytes):
    10,001 MB
                            Waiting for access to input volume
                            <VOLUMEXXX>
                            (10382 seconds). Current output
    volume(s):
                            <SOMEVOLUME>.

    The symptom is only seen for reclamation triggered by migration,
    standalone reclamation is not exposed.
      Tivoli Storage Manager / IBM Spectrum Protect Versions
    Affected: all supported
      Initial Impact: Low
      Additional Keywords: TSM IBM Spectrum Protect

Local fix

  • Change the reclamation threshold of the storage pool so
    automated reclamation is not triggered.
