Error description

  • "Move container" can cause server to crash if there is
    insufficient directory space to handle
the amount of data to be moved, and therefore is unable to
assign a directory for the target container.

The activity log will just report the move container command
being started before the crash. No error message is seen.

Running debugger on the dump file will show (dbx on AIX
    example):

    IOT/Abort trap in pthread_kill at 0x900000000578f14 ($t2860383)
    0x900000000578f14 (pthread_kill+0xd4) e8410028 ld
    r2,0x28(r1)
    (dbx) where
    pthread_kill(??, ??) at 0x900000000578f14

    MoveContainerThread(??) at 0x100a1fcb0

Another stack can be seen for this issue.

For example, using gectoreinfo utility on Linux server:

    #0 0x0000000000cc4737 in RecordMoveInProgress (argP=<value
    optimized
    out>) at sddefrag.c:2306

    /lib64/libpthread.so.0
    #5 0x0000003dd54e8bcd in clone () from /lib64/libc.so.6

    IBM Spectrum Protect versions affected:
Server 7.1.3.x and higher on all supported platforms

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords: TSM crash core abend space containers sd

Local fix

  • Ensure that there is sufficient free space in one of the
stgpooldir directories to handle the move container data needing
    to be processed.
