Error description

  • The Background defragmentation processing used for container
storage pools leverages move container processing to move
data off of highly fragmented containers. When there is
not enough free space in any of the defined container storage
pools directories/filesystems for a new container to be
allocated the move container activity being by the background
defragmentation process will fail with an ANR0203E insufficent
space condition. The move container function requires a new
container be allocated as the destination for the data being
moved from the source container. For this case of the
background fragmentation processing that uses the move container
function a check for for the needed free space should be
done before the defrag processing is initiated. The
APAR is being opened to address the need for the background
defrag process to make this free space check prior to invoking
the move code. This APAR will not address the requirement
that the move container function requires enough free space for
a new container allocation in order to avoid the ANR0203E
    insufficent space failure.
If the background defragmentation process cannot allocate a
new container due to insufficient free space in the target
directory, the process will fail with the following:
ANR0203E MOVE CONTAINER process # terminated for
    <directory name> - insufficent space in directory
    <directory name>.
Additional Keywords: move container failure defrag
    defragmentation OOS error fs

Local fix

  • Add more space to the container pool for which the
    MOVE CONTAINER is failing.
