Error description

  • The Tivoli Storage Manager server will hang when a trace is
activated and the filesystem where the tracefile is written to
became full (due to the growing tracefile). The following error
may be reported in activity log:
ANR0947E Error writing to trace file /xxxx/trace.out.
In such a situation it is not possible to open new session with
    the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: All platforms V6.3
    and V7.1

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics :

On AIX server, a "procstack <pid>" using the pid of the dsmserv
process shows a lot of threads in "TrDispFormattedMsg" like
    below :

    _cond_wait_global(??, ??, ??) + 0x4f0
    _cond_wait(??, ??, ??) + 0x38
    pthread_cond_wait(??, ??) + 0x1a8
    pkWaitConditionTracked(??, ??, ??, ??, ??) + 0xb0
    TrDispFormattedMsg(??, ??, ??, ??) + 0xd0
    TrPrintfExt(0x100ed6fe8, 0x7e0, 0x59,......
    PutConsoleMsg(??, ??, ??, ??) + 0x43c
    StdPutMsg(??, ??, ??, ??, ??, ??, ??, ??) + 0x1338
    outMsgf(0x19800000198, 0x197df7, .....
    smExecuteSession(??, ??, ??, ??, ??, ??, ??, ??) + 0x2018
    psSessionThread(??) + 0x258
    StartThread(??) + 0xa0
    _pthread_body(??) + 0xf0

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords: TSM Spectrum protect trace begin enable
    hung freeze

Local fix

  • - Try to stop trace with command "trace end" from an already
open admin session if one exist. If there is no existing admin
session alive, kill the dsmserv process and restart the server
without trace to clean the situation.
    - Be sure the filesystem used to store the trace file is large
enough or use the MAXSIZE option of the "trace begin" command to
    limit the trace size.
