Error description

  • When a tape write fails due to the tape volume being full it is
possible that the Tivoli Storage Manager server will take the
drive offline. Output similar to the following may be reported:
    02/10/2016 12:00:11 ANR0511I Session 419608 opened output
    volume AB1234L3. (SESSION: 419608)

    02/10/2016 12:00:11 ANR8792E Unrecoverable drive failures
on drive VTLDRV29 (/dev/IBMtape29); drive is now marked offline.
    (SESSION: 419608)
In this situation, the library was a Protectier virtual tape
library and the tape in question is reported by the Protectier
as being full. The tape in question is still considered to be
in a read/write state by Tivoli Storage Manager and any attempt
to write to it results in the ANR8944E error message as seen
above. This results in the drive being taken offline. Tivoli
Storage Manager should not write data to this volume and mark it
full. Furthermore, the drive should not be taken offline in
    this situation.
    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
    6.3.x Tivoli Storage Manager Server
    7.1.x IBM Spectrum Protect Server
    Initial Impact: Low
    Additional Keywords: EOV EOT

Local fix

  • Set the full volume to read/only via update volume to prevent
tape drives from being set offline.
