Error description

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Server memory usage increases daily. The
"show alloc" command shows the allocated memory for Status
Monitoring thread used to monitor replication work load continue
to increase if the replication process is active.

    L2/Customer diagnostics:
    .
Collect dynamic output of "show alloc", the data shows the
allocated memory bytes for "StatusMonitorThread" from imrepl.c
    increases:

    For example:

    Jan: 29th:
imrepl.c line xxxx: 18533340 entries for 23574408480 bytes
     (CopyNodeFsList) thread 35(StatusMonitorThread parent=1)

    Jan 30th

imrepl.c line xxxx: 19451961 entries for 24742894392 bytes
    (CopyNodeFsList) thread 35(StatusMonitorThread parent=1)

    Jan 31st:

imrepl.c line xxxx: 22466115 entries for 28576898280 bytes
     (CopyNodeFsList) thread 35(StatusMonitorThread parent=1)

The problem can happen if both below conditions are true:

    1: SHOW MONREPLINFO' shows :

    Sync pass 1 is running

2:" Q proc" shows replication is running.

    Note:
The status monitor checks whether the server needs to perform
the weekly comprehensive count of replication workload. While
the thread that performs replication workload count is running
the status monitor is incorrectly attempting to start another
thread to do the replication workload count. This problem can
happen if the thread, ReplCountSyncThread, and a node
replication are running at the same time.

    .

    Versions/Platform Affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect Server version 7.1.3 and above on all
    supported platforms

    Initial Impact:
    HIGH

    Additional Keywords:
Memory leak imrepl.c StatusMonitor CopyNodeFsList MONREPLINFO
    ReplCountSyncThread tsm

Local fix

  • 1: execute below undocumented command, to temporarily stop the
status monitor from monitoring the replication workload.

     SETOPT ALLOWREPLWRKLOADMONITOR NO

2: recycle the instance as needed to release the already
    allocated memory.
