Error description

  • When the running 'dsmserv format' command or using the IBM
Configuration Wizard (dsmicfgx), and specifying the DBDIR option
     to use a
Spectrum Scale 4.1.1 or higher filesystem (formerly known as
    GPFS), it can fail with:

ANR7801I Subsystem process ID is 44328.
    ANR0900I Processing options file /tsm/dsmserv.opt.
ANR0010W Unable to open message catalog for language
    en_US.UTF-8. The
default language message catalog will be used.
    ANR7814I Using instance directory /tsm/tsm_instance.
ANR4726I The ICC support module has been loaded.
ANR1905E Path /tsm/db_vol/tsmdb001 for DBDIR does not exist or
    is not
    empty.
    ANR2678E Server database format failed.

Starting with Spectrum Scale 4.1.1 there will be always a
    '.snapshots'
sub directory in the root directory of a
filesystem when creating with the 'mmcrfs' command.

    ie.

    # ls -la /tsm/db_vol/tsmdb001

    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 262144 Nov 12 14:21 .
    drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Nov 12 14:52 ..
    dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 32768 Jan 1 1970 .snapshots

Tivoli Storage Manager Server Versions Affected: 6.3.x and 7.1.x
on AIX, Linux and Windows platforms

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords:  spectrum protect SP TSM  install format
    GPFS scale

Local fix

  • Use the mmsnapdir command to rename the .snapshots directory to
lost+found before formatting server. The directory name can be
changed back afterwards. For example, if the DBDIR file system
    is known as /dev/fs1:
    .
      mmsnapdir fs1 -s lost+found

run server formatting (dsmserv format or the IBM configuration
    Wizard)

      mmsnapdir fs1 -s .snapshots
