IT13213: RESTORE FILES MAY FAIL WITH ANR8311E ERRNO=75 IF FILES WERE WRITTEN TO THE TAPE DRIVE OF DEVCLASS WITH LBPROTECT ENABLED

APAR status

Error description

  • If uses do backup, archive, or migrate files to the tape media
    under following conditions, they may fail to restore, retrieve,
    or recall files with ANR8311E error:
    - Using tape drive and tape media that support "Logical Block
    Protection (LBP)."  See list of supported devices in
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSGSG7_7.1.1/com.i
    bm.itsm.srv.doc/r_lbp_drives.html .
    - Enabling LBP by DEFine DEVClass with specifying
    LBProtect=READWrite or WRITEOnly
    - Enabling the mount retention by DEFine DEVClass with
    specifying MOUNTRetention to larger value than 0.
    
    Files were written to the tape volume without failure, but
    files may fail to be read with the following error:
    
    ANR8311E An I/O error occurred while accessing drive drive_name
    (/dev/device_name) for READ operation, errno = 75, rc = 2864.
    
    The issue can occur only in case that LBP setting in the tape
    drive was reset due to unexpected H/W issue while the tape
    media was kept mounted in the tape drive and then the server or
    storage agent wrote files after REOPEN operation.  The server
    does not verify the LBP setting for non-empty volume in REOPEN
    operation regardless the LBP setting of the tape
    drive was reset.
    
    The IBM lin_tape device driver version is 3.0.3.2.
    
    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
    Tivoli Storage Manager Server and Storage Agent 6.3 and 7.1
    with on all supported platform

Local fix

  • Files can be read by updating DEVclass with LBProtect=No.
    If files were once marked as damaged due to read failure, run
    AUDIT VOLUME volume_name FIX=No after updating DEVclass with
    LBProtect=No to reset damaged flag.
